SEIU Local 500 Endorses Marc Elrich for Montgomery County Executive
SILVER SPRING, Md._ On February 23, Local 500 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced their endorsement of Marc Elrich for Montgomery County Executive. SEIU Local 500, the largest and fastest-growing union in Montgomery County, represents Montgomery County Public School employees who work in building services, food services, maintenance, media and technology, administrative offices, security, transportation, and the classroom (as instructional assistants). Child care providers, part-time faculty at Montgomery College, and part-time faculty at other area higher education institutions are also covered by the union.
“As a former public school teacher, I know the essential work that SEIU Local 500 members provide to our students,” Elrich said. “They’re the bus drivers who ensure that kids throughout Montgomery County get to school on time, they’re the cafeteria workers who make sure kids have something to eat, they’re the instructional aides who support student learning in the classroom, and they’re all the other non-teaching staff who make a big difference in students’ school experiences. I am honored to have their support.”
"Our members voted to stand with Marc because Marc has stood with us," observed Local 500 Political Director Mark McLaurin. "In these uncertain times, working people need a champion, and if his history is any guide, we'll have one in Marc Elrich!"
Elrich also recently received the endorsement of the Maryland State Community Action Program of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. He has been endorsed by nine organizations overall, including every other union that has made an endorsement decision thus far – 32BJ SEIU, which represents office cleaners in Montgomery County; the Metropolitan Washington Council of the AFL-CIO, which coordinates activities for 180 area unions; the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council, which primarily represents construction workers; and the Montgomery County Federation of Teachers, which represents tutors.
