Progressive Maryland Endorses Marc Elrich for Montgomery County Executive

Montgomery County, MD_ On February 12, Progressive Maryland announced their endorsement of Marc Elrich, who is running for Montgomery County Executive.

Progressive Maryland's Executive Director Larry Stafford expressed excitement about the endorsement, stating “Marc Elrich is a candidate with proven progressive legislative victories. He has worked for the people of Montgomery County by strengthening the job market, improving the public school system and protecting and rebuilding the environment.”

Progressive Maryland said Elrich’s advocacy as an at-large member of the Montgomery County Council since 2006 has made a major difference in the county already. They pointed to his leadership in fighting to protect Ten Mile Creek beginning in 2009, supporting grass fields over artificial turf, raising the county’s minimum wage, and promoting responsible development. His plans to deal with school overcrowding and expand access to early education as County Executive would have an important impact as well, Progressive Maryland said.

“I was a founding member of Progressive Montgomery - the precursor group to Progressive Maryland - and am impressed by the degree to which the organization has become a real force in progressive politics in Montgomery County,” Elrich said. “I have been thankful for their partnership in making the county a better place to live and work and am honored to have their endorsement. I would look forward to continuing to work with them as the next County Executive.”

Progressive Maryland has a long and storied history in the state of Maryland. For 17 years Progressive Maryland has been at the forefront of fights for increased wages, an end to racism, and universal health care. After the 2016 Presidential race, which resulted in the victory of one of the most radical right wing candidates in modern history, progressives have exploded into greater levels of activism across the country. Progressive Maryland is poised to be a force in the 2018 elections, pulling the party and its elected leaders towards progressive champions that will work for the communities in Maryland.
